Publishing Principles Old
Introduction
This section provides an overview of the process leading to the scholarly and peer-reviewed publication ISSUE, which is published by LASALLE College of the Arts, University of the Arts Singapore, since 2012.
Published once a year, ISSUE is peer-reviewed. It has a limited print run and, since 2023, has an online version.

Editorial Guidance
An Artistic Advisor and an Editorial Board support the journal. The Advisor work with the Editor to identify artistic themes for each volume. Together with the Editorial Board, the journal identifies and curates artists, writers and scholars working on the theme of the volume. The purpose of curating by inviting writers is to foster a diversity of practices and voices from across the world, especially in Asia. There is no term limit for the advisor and the board; all discussions, where needed, are via email.
Journal Administration
The Editor is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the editorial process. The editor identifies and manages the peer review process and approves the publication for print.
The editor is supported by an Editorial and Publication Support Team together with an assistant editor and copyeditor who meets and discusses with writers on technical aspects of the publication and ensures its preparedness for publication. Proofreading is done by both the Editor and Assistant Editor. The design and layout are outsourced to third parties. Image use and approval are overseen by the Advisor.
Copyright and Image Use
Authors retain copyright. All copyright permissions for use of 3rd-party materials (e.g. images, text, etc.) must be secured by the author from the respective artist and agencies concerned. Authors are encouraged to use free open-source image banks.
The journal does publish previously published works. Authors need to acknowledge the permissions granted within their article appropriately.
The journal is licensed under Creative Commons.
Submission Review Process
The review process comprises an editorial review and a peer review.
Editorial Review
The Editor and Assistant Editor undertake a review and assessment of an article before submission for peer review. The review is to ascertain that the submission meets the thematic consideration and is of appropriate standard (writing and critical) before peer review.
For image-based exhibitions, the artistic advisor reviews this for veracity, standard and appropriateness. Where there is substantive text attached to the exhibitions, the Editor may decide to have it peer-reviewed.
For interviews and documented conversations (commentary, opinion, etc.) appearing in the journal, the editorial review is the only assessment taken. The Editor, in assessing the submission, may decide to call for additional peer review.
The journal sees the editorial review as an important part of the peer review process. Submissions not meeting the standards will be notified before the peer review process.
Peer Review
The journal engages discipline experts to review articles and provide their feedback. Due to the specialist nature of the art journal and its themes, the Editor identifies 1-3 reviewers which may include the editor, assistant editor, and editorial board members) to review this.
Articles undergo a double-blind (anonymous) peer review where reviewers do not know the authors’ names, nor do the authors know who the reviewers are.
Review Recommendations: There are three outcomes.
- Publishable: Submission is accepted for publication, though it still may require copyediting.
- Publishable with revisions: Submission is accepted for publication pending recommended revisions.
- Not ready for publication. The article is not suitable for publication in this journal, and in this instance, the Editor may decide to send the article for additional peer review or decline the submission.
Production and Style Guide
The journal seeks to ensure a consistent look and feel for the journal and hence works with a. regular design company to ensure its quality mark.
The journal follows the latest MLA style guide, and the assistant editor and copyeditor are responsible for ensuring the consistency of its use throughout the journal.
Indexing
The journal is ISSN registered and every individual article is DOI minted with Crossref.
Dissemination
The journal is accessible online, and LASALLE distributes printed copies to libraries worldwide.
